How to Have a Safe And Healthy Pregnancy In The Times of a Pandemic

Pregnancy is a beautiful yet stressful journey. But it can get even more overwhelming given the novel coronavirus and the COVID-19 pandemic. Currently, pregnant women are worried about how to protect themselves and their babies during the pandemic. Let us get some insights about what you can do to limit your exposure and stay safe and healthy during this time.

Pregnancy and the risk of pandemic

In general, pregnancy itself brings changes in your immune system and its response to any viral infection. These changes may worsen your immune response and cause severe symptoms. COVID-19 has the same effect on your body.

Based on CDC recommendations, pregnant women are at an increased risk for severe illness from COVID-19 than non-pregnant women. The risk may have adverse outcomes, such as preterm birth.

Thus, all pregnant women must get the necessary information about COVID-19. Learn more about its mode of transmission and the associated risks to protect yourself better. Besides, do not trust fake news and rumors on social media.

Here are some measures to follow to prevent COVID-19 infection and its risks:

  • Make sure to stay home as much as possible.
  • Keep the number of visitors at home to a minimum, including housekeepers and domestic help.
  • Maintain a social distance of at least one meter from your family members.
  • Wash your hands frequently with soap and water or use a sanitizer/disinfectant. Scrub them for at least 20 seconds.
  • Cover your nose and mouth with a tissue or a bent elbow when sneezing or coughing, and make sure to discard the tissue properly. Avoid touching your nose, mouth, and eyes frequently.

Staying healthy during the pandemic

A healthy diet plays a crucial role in pregnancy, impacts the immune system, and reduces the severity and risk of infections. Researchers and doctors stress the importance of immune boosters like Vitamin D & C and Zinc in the diet. It is believed that their deficiency can cause increased susceptibility to infectious diseases, especially upper respiratory tract infections.

Another important factor that negatively impacts pregnant women is stress. During these unprecedented times, stress is more prevalent. Ensure to practice meditation and yoga for relaxation and boost your mood.

Stay connected with your family and friends regularly. It is essential to get regular sleep every day, one or two hours in the afternoon and eight hours at night. Indulge in indoor activities like cooking, gardening, or decorating to avoid stress.

What is the risk of transmission from mother to fetus in the womb?

The risk of transmission of the virus from mother to fetus remains widely debated. Astudy published in February 2021 that discussed the effects of COVID-19 on pregnancy outcomes revealed that vertical transmission is possible but has not been conclusively proven. Though rare, a newborn can contract COVID-19 from a mother or other caregiver.
